The days follow one another but they are not the same...Would you like to discover the Splendor & Degradation expansion together?
Through Songs is definitely a deeper scenario than it seems! Here it is again presented as a new grid expanded from the first, and this time it will show you the story seen by the third protagonist (we'll return to that tomorrow).
The destinies of our three heroes seem to be definitely linked; and the recent disappearance of Cigadelia will soon put the whole city into turmoil. It seems necessary to solve this acute problem as soon as possible and to avoid spreading the news in any way we can. In this scenario everything will begin in a sterile and opulent universe, in the office of an independent Apilopter...
As you have already understood, this grid should be placed side by side and played simultaneously with its counterpart.
đŹ Authors' note:
"Which came first: the egg or the chicken? In the two years that we've been introducing the prototype game, we've been able to run 300 to 400 test games, and we regularly get questions from curious players: "How do you build grids, it's supposed to be a real puzzle, right?
Unexpectedly, this is perhaps the easiest part of script development. First of all, we must remember that we start each story in our native language, French. But very quickly we make sure that the key words will not be a problem in English. To ensure this we work almost in real-time with Cecilie Ann Mieland Chantrein, a French-American designer and friend. Cecilie is a valuable collaborator because she not only understands French, but she also knows how to re-transpose puns, poems, riddles, and jokes to fit the American culture. This is how we make sure that the spirit of our game remains intact, even if Cecilie sometimes slips little pieces of her soul into certain texts.
But we're getting off track... how the heck are these wordsearch grids developed? Well, first we imagine the outline of our scenario and start placing the main places and scenes. This gives us names to use for drawing the skeleton of the narrative tree - to understand the words nested within each other on the grid. But almost all the time a word can easily be replaced by another one if it suits us better on the grid, because these are only keywords.
If we need a short word on the grid for the card that talks about the market, we use the word MARKET or STORE or ALLEY. If you need to open the game, then use a longer word like ARTISAN MARKET.
We will then only need to adapt our text very slightly. And the same goes for Cecilie's work on the grid translation."
đ The most observant among you will notice that this grid is very slightly larger than its counterparts. Indeed, we have decided to remove the numbering of horizontal and vertical axes specifically in this chapter... you will discover why in a future news.
This extra line means more room to hide words and increase the length of the script!

ÊÄÉ ââââââ± Version Française - voir plus bas â°âââââ ÊÄÉ
Of the five Major Guilds, there are two that our Great Monarchs fear, because their political weight is so great. I am only an old Lepilazuli who waits for his time, but it was not always so. Long time high adviser of Neoptera V, started my life as a young man as a simple laborer at the old docks. I owe my Kellian name, Lukane, to my Scars builder brothers.
As you enter our world for the first time, let me introduce you to the two most influential guilds of the Great City of Kell...
The Alioptera Caste
Over the past few years, the Alioptera have gained influence in Kell society, opening a breach in the power of the Lepilazuli. From the immense Ruchal Palace, Queen NeoptĂšra VII symbolically reigns over an extremely hierarchical administration, but within which, behind the scenes, an all-powerful steward leads with authority.
In an excessively pyramidal spirit and under his orders, several zealous managers share the 3 main services of the caste: Health, Birth & Research In each service, several hundred hardworking women officiate.
At the Health Service, the main mission is to care for the living forces of the dominant castes. It, therefore, does not manage the care of Outcastes who, left to their own devices, often resort to self-proclaimed healers⊠when they have the means.
Attached to the Ruchal Palace, a large building on several levels treats injured or sick patients. The workers work in regulatory medical attire ⊠but refined. It is even said that certain Scar Tribe workers and other SquadrAnt Legion officers sometimes call in sick, in order to be able to approach the Alioptera fantasy.
At the hatchery, a battalion of caregivers monitors and cares for the eggs and larvae of the Large Arthropods.
Located on the outskirts of Kell, the hatchery is a huge complex built near hot springs. There, imposing structures adjoin large pools in which the little ones protected by our caregivers wade cheerfully and take advantage of the virtues of these thermal waters. In the infectious diseases department, former convicts serve their sentences in rigorous outfits, an austere mask affixed to their faces.
Within the Palais Ruchal, medical research is kept under the control of the steward who regulates all comings and goings within.
The elite of the apilopterous guard, the agents of the STING, jealously protect the accesses of this laboratory. The scholars and researchers who manage it live apart from society. They are recognized by their pale complexion, their elongated features, and their long, unkempt hair.
Insects & Major Guilds:
If it is true that the Apiloptera mainly use the services of bees to extract the precious honey, the main source of Kell's sugar; they also take advantage of everything that the amazing animal is able to produce or harvest throughout the year: royal jelly, propolis, pollen, wax, etc.
However, most of the specimens live far from civilization, below the mountains or in the gigantic Valley of the Sequoias. Considered too cumbersome, noisy, and unwieldy, drones are only used for transporting heavy loads by air.
The Scar Tribe
A powerful guild of craftsmen, tradesmen, and builders, the Tribe of Scars boasts some of the strongest workers, most ingenious architects, and most talented creators the great Kell has ever known.
There is no traditional or uniform dress for the Scars. Tribe members can be recognized by their purple-beige accoutrements, their tattoos and of course their professional gear.
Within the caste, there are 3 stages or ranks:
1st Grade
The young people/apprentices, who are familiarly called "dung beetles", have no tattoos and can only be distinguished by the color of their uniform.
2nd Grade
Those who, as dung beetles, have accomplished a major work or sometimes a feat in their field and are therefore elevated to the rank of Master Builder, Master Blacksmith, Master Goldsmith, etc.
These have a tattoo on their face as a mark of their prowess and elevation within their profession.
3rd Grade
Finally, the Venerables train the young and the apprentices. These elders are no longer active but are maintained by their guild to perpetuate their knowledge until the end of their lives. When they pass from Master to Venerable, their tattoos are sublimated by a layer of "scarification" which marks the contours of their tattoos.
There are now nearly 10,000 official members of the Tribe, making it the largest Major Guild in the City. Frequently, wealthy Kellian entrepreneurs try to poach the best Scars engineers and builders, but the attachment to their order is usually much stronger than a futile greed.
It must also be said that the Scars are the only citizens of Kell, keeping their elders in active life until their last breath.
Once unified with the herders and farmers, they split into two distinct groups during the summer of the Great Divide: the Scars on one side, and the Aphideers on the other.
Insects & Major Guilds:
In the kingdom of the Scars, beetles are kings!
True construction machines, beetles, geotrupes or stag beetles are tireless companions to the builders of Kell. But burrowing insects are also valuable assets for large-scale construction sites. Mole crickets are responsible for drilling in the city's subsoil.
If they are not afraid of heights, the Scars (for the most part) do not enjoy the aerial pleasures that some of their creatures allow.
Stay tuned for even more lore of the world of Kell in a future update!

A wing flap in Japan creates a tornado in this Kickstarter campaign... Get surprised today with an upgrade to the main game box of The Butterfly's Breath...
During the Daily Reveal #4, many of you on the networks and in comments let us know that you were happy to discover that we had decided to improve the content of the core box The Butterfly's Breath.
Thanks to your support on the campaign and how many copies of Once Upon a Line will now be created, we'll able to add in some improvements to the components.
Some of you have told us that some components of the game were a little too plain for your taste.
And we agree. So, we chose to upgrade several components of the main box of The Butterfly's Breath:
Double layer hero trays
The Storage Box
The Display Box
Â
And to give material even more durability, we decided to reinforce the width of all the Hero Trays. The contours of the double layer are now 10mm wide.
đŹ Authors' note:
"If it would take a decade of work to write a novel, with the mechanics of the game and the format of our cards, we can write hundreds of stories specially tailored to play with your emotions. Of course, the framework of each saga implies rigor and discipline in order to keep the plot and the story coherent.
As for the theme, while our main goal is to create situations that resonate with your heart, we felt that a special feature, a trick would be more convenient to stimulate our creativity. Insects quickly became an obvious choice, though we've never spoken about them much during more than twenty years of our friendship. And whoever says insects, says entomology! Of course, we make a few mistakes in our creations, sometimes we are too excited by the epic nature of the scene built in our heads, but hey ... it's all just a game after all, right?
And if you turn a card and discover a few extra spots on the back of a ladybug, a slightly bleeding arthropod or any other oddity, don't get offended and continue to dream, keeping in mind that we humans haven't stopped mutating since our emergence as single-celled organisms. So ... who knows?"
đ»New "Action" Symbol
Each action field on the Hero Trays is now visually labeled and numbered to make it easier to explain in the rules and make it easier to start the game. Players will simply have to follow the order of actions 1,2,3,4 to play their actions.
This symbol is an optical illusion known to any self-respecting geek. This is the Penrose triangle, named after the 1950s mathematician who made it famous. An impossible figure which we found very interesting to represent the influence of a Zephyrhymes, an ethereal spirit on the physical plane of humans, as a bridge between the two worlds.

Before we start today's Daily Reveal, we wanted to let you know that we will be live today to answer your questions and talk about something very special, the World of Once Upon a Line! Live at 8pm CET / 2pm ET / 11am PT with Dan & William of Perte & Fracas and Az of Lucky Duck Games to spend time with you all!
Would you like to play?
Mantis, Earwig, Ladybird or Stick insect: imagine the function of one of these 4 insects in Kell's World. The 10 best ideas will be submitted to the public vote. The most popular one will be illustrated by Alexandre Gimbel and printed in all Once Upon a Line - The Butterfly's Breath boxes with your nickname.
My eyes can't see very far and my hands are dancing in the wind. My whole body is in agony and every minute that passes brings me closer to eternity. But my heart is a sanctuary in which a valiant spirit drinks like the beating of a butterfly's wing. I am Lukane, the Elder and this is my city.
Almost a hundred years ago, we dune surveyors began our long exodus in search of a land of abundance and prosperity. Carried by the winds, and probably also by luck, riding for weeks on our majestic Oedipods, we finally arrived in the land of Kell.
I was only eight years old then, but I will never forget the spectacle offered to me by this new emerging world. There, under our amazed eyes lived a whole people in perfect symbiosis with the lords of the earth: the Great Arthropods.
We then learned how the Kellians, aided by the "pollentanyl", had sculpted the strata of society to establish a new order and erect this resurgent civilization around five Major Guilds.Â
The Assembly of Lepilazuli
A thick fog gravitates around this elitist and prized circle. Discreet yet ubiquitous, the Lepilazuli inspire respect and arouse jealousy.
Dressed in white togas, a symbol of virtue and humility, their outfit imposes a social distance from the lower strata of society. History textbooks tell that the Lepilazuli were basically the very first Kellians, builders of the City, and saviors of humanity.
Deified for having discovered the secrets of âpollentanylâ, a chemical substance that makes the Great Arthropods docile, their respectability has gradually left them, thus causing them to decline in public opinion. This is especially the case of the Great Monarchs, a handful of individuals living in seclusion, at the top of high ivory towers. Their extremely rare appearances flesh out the mystery that hovers over their way of life and their legitimacy to enjoy the status of the wealthy.
In each of the 3 towers, the Lepilazuli exact their control over:
THE BANK
In a jealously kept secret place, a division of chemists proceeds every day with the production of âpelletsâ, small tablets of pollentanyl amalgamated with various adjuvants. While these small tokens help calm the savagery of the arthropods, they also serve as currency for all commercial transactions within Kell.
A division of zealous officials scrupulously controls the production, storage, and distribution of pellets. Access is very heavily guarded by the SquadrAnt Legion elite trained in maintaining order and anti-terrorism. Few non-Lepilazuli have ever been able to enter the Celestial Gardens, the epicenter of monetary power where the pellet stock safes are placed under high security.
KNOWLEDGE
An entire tower is dedicated to education. Scouts relentlessly scour all of Kell's neighborhoods to spot the brightest minds from an early age.
Essentially oriented to science & letters, the upper classes also train senior officials, who are then placed in the highest positions of the 5 Major Guilds.
POLITICS
Each year, by a vote among a consortium of intellectuals of the caste, a procession of politicians is responsible for ensuring the proper functioning of the City, passing laws, and deciding on the allocation of budgets.
Often criticized for their decisions, the politicians mix little with the population, thus increasing the obvious gap between the people and the legislator.
Insects & Major Guilds:
Faithful to tradition, the most powerful Lepilazuli grant themselves exclusive ownership of butterflies. For a few years now, the latest chic within the guild has been to own a pet caterpillar. Sometimes stinging but always voracious, the capricious companions of this small aristocracy have already reduced by half the bucolic arboretum of the Latin Quarter.
The SquadrAnt Legion
Placed under the orders of the Red Empress, the SquadrAnt Legion constitutes a military force able to ensure the maintenance of public order in the city and serves on the outskirts to repel wild insects, destroy nests and alert the authorities of any external threat.
Within this Major Guild, there are mainly 3 distinct army corps:
The Trophal Guard
The Trophal Guard brings together all of the land army corps necessary for security and maintaining order in the heart of the city. Located not far from the Grand Place, the garrison is a fortified building in the shape of a dome and pierced with loopholes. Its surrounding wall protects the guards, the militiamen, and the SquadrAnt apprentices.
The Lugubre Patrol
A mounted division of the legion, the patrol rides giant ants specially selected for their speed and combat ability.
Unseen protectors of the peace of Kell, Patrollers dedicate their lives to the savagery of the Outer Plains. A few kilometers from the city, in fact, the Large Arthropods, due to their predatory instincts, constitute a permanent threat that must be constantly repelled.
The Crowned Squadron
The most skilled pilots serve in the Crowned Squadron, a section specializing in aerial, rapid, and surgical interventions. In this very SquadrAnt elite, the heroes of the City actually live behind closed doors in an annex of the garrison and are compelled to always be at the disposal of the high command.
Johnston's Cell
Within the high command, they are no career soldiers, but instead a cohort of Lepidores having swapped their white robes for a ceremonial kimono and under the orders of the Red Empress; a luminary with a masked face, source of all the rumors within the legion. In addition to their regular administrative functions, this command is actually the eyes and ears of the Great Monarchs, informed daily of each major event.
Insects & Major Guilds:
Swift, vigorous, and organized, red ants are the favored partners of Kell's military forces. Regularly crippled when not simply slain in the outer theatres of operations on the edge of Kell, the valiant fighters are the subject of a closely guarded secret.
Several dozens of meters below the imposing dome of the garrison, a gigantic queen almost eight meters long tirelessly lays the new mounts of the SquadrAnt Legion and the winged princesses for which the Crowned Squadron is renowned.
Stay tuned for even more lore of the world of Kell in a future update!

Before we start today's Daily Reveal, we wanted to let you know that we will be live today to answer your questions and talk about something very special, the World of Once Upon a Line! We'll have a new update later today to explore some of the Castes that are an important part of this exciting new world and then we'll be together at 8pm CET / 2pm ET / 11am PT with Dan & William of Perte & Fracas and Az of Lucky Duck Games to spend time with you all!
It is still a pleasure to send you these little messages. As usual, we will take the time to tell you more about this available expansion Splendor & Degradation...
If you didn't know it, the universe created for this campaign integrates a whole society reorganized around the presence of insects, just like James Gurney did in his time by creating Dinotopia. Certain names, such as "velocipate/polenim...," are all clues intelligently scattered throughout this society to portray the omnipresence of larger beings.
In Kell, the roles are well distributed; in simple terms, the situation can be summarized as follows:Â
the Lepilazulis take care of politics and banking,
the SquadrAnts, maintain public order and defense against external threats,
the Aliopteras manage health and science,
the Scars are the craftsmen and builders of the city,
finally, the Aphideers maintain breeding, fishing, and agriculture.
In this scenario, nearly 23 XXL size cards will be added and almost all of them will be illustrated. Among them, you will find 2 cards for a new surprise Hero to discover below...
đŹ Authors' note: "In this scenario, we tried to experiment with an even more immersive exploration for you. To do this, we used two devices in the design of the story maps. Our first trick is to write in the first person. We have taken as a reference one of the literary masterpieces of the 20th century: The Stranger by Albert Camus. From the very beginning, the author plunges us into the turmoil of the story without any introductory words: "Today Mom died. Or maybe yesterday, I don't know."This way of constructing the narrative is a real challenge for us because it opposes all the standards of board and role-playing games. In the same way, from the first illustration, we wanted to represent the vision of the embodied Hero: Deciton. Here again, the idea is to see the story evolving through the eyes of the young SquadrAnt Legion brigadier and thus to make decisions even more rooted in the Hero's experience."
Illustrations: Leandro Di Terlizzi & Guillaume Weber Making-of the visual for CigadeliaÂ
Important: The number of cards in each scenario could increase or decrease (likely by a maximum of 3 cards) when the whole game is finished in order to harmonize and balance the contents and the duration of the game.
